Prodigy Child Actress, Fukuda Mayuko (福田麻由子), All of a Sudden Become an Adult Woman! "MaiMai Shinko" is Big Hit With Grassroots

A mouthful title, taken from CinemaToday.

Since its opening in theaters on November 2009, even now still continues with its long run, also with the decision for "Maimai Shinko to Sennen no Mahou" to become DVD, Fukuda Mayuko, who lends her voice for the main character, Shinko, looks back at the challenges of that time.

From TV dramas, "Byakuyako" and "Jyoou no Kyoushitsu", to movies, "Heaven's Door" or "Little DJ ~Chiisana Koi no Monogatari", this prodigy child actress, Fukuda, had also safely entered high school. Amongst the innocent, her face had begins to display a bit of adult. But when asked, "What's your favorite anime when you were young?", "When I was young, I liked Digimon. I won't allow anyone who can't tell the different to say they are similar (laughs)" while saying these words, she looks displeased, there are still innocence in her. Like that, Fukuda's understanding on this work is, "From the anime that I watched when I was younger, I still have impressions of them. But, a work that can influenced me, I haven't felt that impression until this work. I think it's a regrets that you can't watch it just because you're an adult." she said as she ponders over the powerful film.

The person in charge of this film, director Katabuchi Sunao, declared that without Fukuda as the voice for Shinko, the film wouldn't be able to complete. "Even though at first, it's a wonder why I was chosen for the role, I'm happy. It was a challenge for myself." Fukuda said, using her lovely voice. However, the voice of Shinko in the film is, with extremely naivety and straightforward tomboy that love to daydream, there's exist a human that conceal in her heart the strengths, weaknesses, and pains. Just like Shinko, she also seems to possessed a powerful voice.

"While doing an earlier work, (for the drama) I noticed how essential it was to heighten your voice. This time, generally I keep in mind to speak clearly, and laugh in a distinct lower voice when laughing. And even when Shinko is worried, or having a quarrel with her friends, I try to convey the feelings that she loves everyone." said Fukuda. Why are there many people that are fascinated by this film that enable it to continues its long run? There's only one reason, isn't it because Fukuda bless this work with her voice?

This work is from an autobiography novel with the same name by Akutagawa Award winner, Takagi Nobuko. Setting in Yamaguchi prefecture in Showa year 30 period, the story is about third grader, Shinko (Fukuda), who's full of imagination, a transferred student from Tokyo, and their interactions, even when they experiences difficulties, they grows together with their friends. Having assisted director Miyazaki Hayao in the films "Sherlock Hound", "Kiki's Delivery Service", and other works, as well as directing World's Masterpieces Theater "Famous Dog Lassie", director Katabuchi Sunao's world view are are portrayed in films that continuously bring tears to your eyes.
